Art and Design Media Learning Outcomes
- Be able to determine and demonstrate concrete methods and processes for research and creation, or performance, in the arts. Accordingly, they will be able to demonstrate skill in graphic and/or symbolic communication.
I saw this outcome as the more research-oriented of the three, taking into account the academic side of the arts. Due to this, I chose to connect an art history research paper to this prompt. I did the paper during my sophomore year in my first art history class and wrote about my favorite painting of all time The Rose by Jay DeFeo, as well as the psychology behind the artist as she created the work over the span of ten years. The work is research-oriented and highlights my writing skills which I thought matched this learning outcome well.
- Be able to assemble or perform work that demonstrates standards of craftsmanship in the discipline. Accordingly, they will learn methods of writing, discussion and critique of creative works of art or music.
For this outcome, I chose a piece of art I did back in one of my first painting classes. It shows precise skill, comfortable use of medium, and standards of craftmanship which is what I think this learning outcome represents.
- Develop skills that expand their expressive capabilities, with the goal of developing a distinct personal voice that emphasizes their interests and experiences.
I liked the portion of this learning outcome that discusses finding a personal voice and style that shows the artist’s interests, experiences, and personality. This is such a crucial part of art, and many young artists go years trying to find their personal voice and what makes their art “special” or unique. To display my multi-faceted experience in the arts and show my personal development I chose to pick my food blog for this learning outcome. It was my first ever experience making a blog, and imbuing my voice was what made it special in my opinion. It also never got boring because I chose something I deeply care about to make my posts on – cooking.
