For this small project, I used the B&W Conversion options and utilized the luminance/luminosity setting and the desaturate tool. This can be found under the “Colors” drop-down, for example: Colors > Desaturate > Desaturate… > Luminance. This option will automatically balance the colors of the chosen picture into greyscale and allow you to play with the levels if you see fit.
